Fetch Food, an engineering startup that provides free restaurant food delivery, won the University of Utah’s 2014 Opportunity Quest Competition on Jan. 17. Karthik Raman, a bioengineering Ph.D. student, and Amrish Kapoor, group advisor who studied computer science at the U, claimed the competition’s top spot and a $5,000 prize from among 32 startups.

Utilizing a patented routing algorithm, Fetch Food prides itself in economizing food delivery and lowering its carbon footprint by pairing electric bikes and scooters with public transit. Customers benefit from speedy delivery and hot meals, restaurants can continue serving valued patrons and the startup’s multimodal delivery format minimizes traffic congestion.

The Opportunity Quest Competition, which consists of three competitions, guides students from business ideation to implementation. The final event is the state-wide Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, in which student entrepreneurs submit comprehensive business plans for the chance to win a $40,000 grand prize.
